Powerexpert Demonstration of an open-air plasma torch

June 29, 2019
Powerexpert performs a demonstration of a custom power electronic converter system designed specifically for a plasma torch application. The power supply and demonstration torch was designed by Powerexpert. It is capable of producing a sustained electrical arc across an 8.5in air gap at up to 450kW, 850ADC, 525VDC.

This successful demonstration marks an important milestone in a long-term project for Powerexpert. It proved to the customer that the performance of this custom system exceeds expectations.

The torch was designed around two 3in OD by 24in long graphite rods and mounted to an adjustable GPO3 rack. The electrode positions can be moved during operation to adjust the air gap between them. The output of the power converter system is connected to each end of the electrodes by clamps. Fire bricks rated for 2300degF were used as a base and as a shield for the glastic. The plasma torch got hot enough to melt the bricks.

This system will be installed in the customer’s plant for final commissioning and testing. Once complete, the Powerexpert will supply several more units that will connect in parallel with this first prototype system.
